Ramcharitar Construction Services Berbice Cricket
Edinburgh Cricket Club has become the latest team to reach the second round of the 2011 Ramcharitar Construction Services First Division 50-Over Knock-out Cricket Competition in Berbice after they defeated West Berbice by 37 runs in their first round encounter played only this Monday after two previous postponements.
In the match which was played at the Edinburgh Ground and which was reduced to 47 Overs-a-side due to a late start, the home team won the toss and chose to bat first. They immediately ran into the fiery pace of former West Indies Under-19 and national fast bowler Keon Joseph who picked up two wickets in his first over to leave them 2 wickets for 0 run.
However, Shafiq Khan and Zaheer Hussain then put on 79 for the third wicket between then to repair the early damage but after that veteran offspinner Dennis Webster removed Hussain for 21 and Sasenarine Sukhdeo for 4 in quick succession to then slip to 83 for 4.
Khan continued to stand firm and proceeded to add 33 for the fifth wicket with Denny David before another two quick wickets fell, this time to legspinner Andrew Dennis, reducing then to 117 for 6.
After another 16 runs were added, yet again two wickets fell very quickly including Khan for a well made 63 (8 fours) which left them at 134 for 8.
This time Edinburgh were rescued by a 53 run 9 wicket stand between Yudrunauth Seepersaud (47 N.O) and Seeram Seecoomar who was out with the last ball of the match for 23, seeing their team to 187 for 9 in their 47 Overs.
Bowling for West Berbice Andrew Dennis took 2 for 16 from 4 Overs, Keon Joseph 2 for 20 from 6 Overs and Dennis Webster 2 for 27 from 10 Overs.
When West Berbice began their run chase for victory, they too started badly to be 16 for 2 – one going the run-out route and the other to offspinner Raid Ali.
Former Berbice cricketers batsmen Artley Bailey and Krishnadat Ramoo, better known for his off spin bowling, then staged a rescue act by putting on 44 for the 3rd wicket but after that Ali, continuing his spell struck three telling blows – Ramoo for 30, Bailey for 21 and Parmanand Sukhra to reduce West Berbice to 76 for 5.
From there former Berbice wicket keeper batsman Kwesi Mentore (27) and Keith Fraser (25) added 35 further before the 6th wicket but with offspinner Sasenarine Sukhdeo picking up two, West Berbice ended at 150 all out in 33 Overs. Bowling for Edinburgh, Raid Ali took 4 for 31 from 10 Overs and Sasenarine Sukhdeo 2 for 25 from 5 Overs.
Edinburgh will now clash with Rose Hall Town Gizmos & Gadgets and a second round match of the competition on Saturday at Rose Hall Town.
