Voir dire commences in Den Amstel murder proceedings
The murder trial for a man accused of stabbing his reputed wife 12 times, continued yesterday before Justice Roxanne George-Wiltshire.
Charged with the capital offence of murdering his reputed wife Claudine Rampersaud is Dwayne Jordan. The incident occurred on June 14, 2007, at Clay Brick Road, Den Amstel, West Coast Demerara.
The case is being put forward by State Prosecutors Konyo Sandiford and Prithima Kissoon. The accused is being represented by attorney at law Nigel Hughes.
Yesterday as the trial continued, Ryan Lewis was further cross examined by the defendant’s lawyer.
Afterwards a voir dire (trial within a trial) commenced. The matter has since been adjourned for Monday.
Lewis who is the dead woman’s brother-in-law had given evidence stating that he was with the deceased woman’s sister Shellon Payne, and was heading to the couple’s home on the night of the incident.
According to the witness, he heard loud screams coming from Rampersaud’s home. Upon hearing that he immediately started running towards the house and kicked a door down. Lewis said that Jordan attacked him.
He told the court that he was chopped by Jordan, who was armed with a hatchet and a knife. A scuffle ensued between the two men and they rolled down the stairs and Lewis was able to identify his attacker.
The witness said he was passed out from wounds that were inflicted by Jordan. He was taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, but was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital. He spent a total of six days in the hospital.
Jordan was found on June 16, 2007, in a clump of bushes behind the yard. He appeared to have injuries and was treated at the West Demerara Regional Hospital.
A post mortem examination was done by Government Pathologist Nehaul Singh. It was determined that Rampersaud died from cerebral hemorrhage due to several stab wounds to the head.
