Dear Editor,
I read your lead new story about the threats being made against your newspaper and senior members of your editorial staff.
A few weeks ago on August 17 I wrote to you asking you to expose the threats that had been made to Mr. Malcolm Harripaul, a frequent letter writer and a critic of the Jagdeo administration.
All threats must be taken seriously, we have seen what can happen when persons in authority manipulate the legal system and single-out persons for “special treatment” or “manners”.
The time has come for the independent media and the political opposition to start documenting these cases and bring them to the attention of the international community. A free press is a main pillar in any democracy, and those who seek to muzzle critics and Journalists who expose government corruption and excesses, must be exposed.
Kaieteur news is a fair and balanced news outlet, and has so far been even handed with their reporting of the facts. Guyanese of all political persuasions should take note of these developments, and register their disdain, this is not a time to be quiet, now is the time to speak up.
“First they came for the communists and I didn’t speak up because I was not a communist; Then they came for the Jews but I didn’t speak up because I was not a Jew; then they came for the trade unionists, but I did not speak up because I was not a trade unionist; then they came for the Catholics but I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me and by that time there was no one left to speak up…” Martin Niemoller. Mark Archer.
