– the hugs her in bed until cops arrive
After subjecting her to months of abuse, a drunken handyman stabbed his lover to death yesterday at the couple’s Meten Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara home.
He then lay with the corpse until police arrived.
Relatives found the body of 42-year-old Radica Ramjattan lying in the Tarla Dam, Meten-Meer-Zorg house that the woman and her lover had moved into less than a month ago.
A sister of the victim said that the suspect, a handyman from Sophia, was hugging the body when she and others arrived at the scene. He remained in the house until police arrived to arrest him.
The woman reportedly sustained one stab wound to the heart. Police recovered a bloodstained knife at the scene.
Kaieteur News understands that the suspect had been consuming alcohol shortly before slaying Ramjattan. A cousin who witnessed the murder reportedly fled the scene.
The victim and suspect had been living together for less than a year and Ramjattan’s relatives all claimed that she was subjected to numerous beatings at her lover’s hands.
Silvia Rampersaud, the victim’s mother, told Kaieteur News that she was that her Zeeburg, West Coast Demerara home at around 17:30 hrs when a nephew arrived and said that ‘Andrew’ had stabbed Radica and that she appeared to be dead.
She said that the nephew claimed that he had jumped through a window and fled the scene.
The woman said that she did not believe the news, and sent Radica’s younger sister, Sonita, to investigate.
The sister told Kaieteur News that on arriving at the house she called out for ‘Andrew’ and Radica, but no one answered.
The woman said that she and a male resident then entered the house and she saw Radica lying facedown and motionless in a pool of blood. She said that ‘Andrew’ was lying near Radica and hugging her. According to the sister, she also saw a long, bloodstained knife nearby.
She said that the suspect denied killing her sister.
“He say he ain’t kill her; he just come. Then he get up and go to the kitchen; then he go back and lie down next to her.”
She said that residents surrounded the building to prevent the suspect from escaping. She then went home and informed her mother of Radica’s death.
Police subsequently arrived and arrested the suspect and a hearse removed the body.
Radica’s mother said that her daughter struck up a relationship with the suspect about a year ago.
