Chattergoon’s all-round performance leads Albion into quarters

A fine all-round performance from Ramnarine Chattergoon, who struck an unbeaten half century and then returned to capture two wickets was chiefly responsible for Albion’s march into the last eight of the inaugural Kares Engineering / Bushy Park Sawmills /Guyana Softball League (GSL) sponsored nationwide 10/10 Tapeball Cricket Tournament which continued on Saturday in Berbice.
His outstanding performance enabled Albion to defeat Unity / Lancaster by 58 runs in their clash.
J.C Chandisingh Secondary also recorded a win in their fixture against Line Path Secondary, while there were walk over victories for New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI) and Sans Souci Secondary, whose respective opponents Abrams Creek and Vryman’s Ervin failed to show.
Batting first at the Area ‘H’ ground in Rose Hall, Albion scored an impressive 118 for 2 from their 10 overs, thanks to Chattergoon’s unbeaten 54, before restricting their opponents to 60 for 9, with Chattergoon returning to take 2 for 15.
When Albion batted, they lost Chattergoon’s younger brother and discarded West Indies opener Sewnarine Chattergoon without scoring, while Caribbean T20 batting sensation Jonathan Foo struck one four and one six in his 15.
Ramnarine Chattergoon later hammered four fours and hit two towering sixes in his innings and along with Hemendra Ramdhial, who belted two sixes and the same number of fours in his unbeaten 33, added 88 runs in an unbroken partnership for the third wicket with Ramnarine Chattergoon.
Elvis Jones and Keith Saroop took one wicket each for Unity/Lancaster Combined, whose topscore of 16 was scored by Devanand Mangal and included two fours and one six, as their batsmen failed to negotiate the bowling of Ramnarine Chattergoon, along with Veerasammy Permaul and Narsingh Deonarine.
Line Path Secondary was asked to take first strike by their opponents who vindicated such by bowling them out for a paltry 37 from 9.2 overs, with Ganesh Ramdhial topscoring with 12.
National Under-19 off spinner Lloydel Lewis led from the front for his team by picking up 4 for 2 while Shailendra Shameer offered support with 2 for 1 for J.C Chandisingh, who scored 38 for 1 in reply, with Shameer hitting three fours in his unbeaten 18 while Madhan Budhram was there with him on 13.
In the other completed encounter, Corentyne Comprehensive recorded a commanding 10 wicket victory over Agri Warriors of Essequibo in a female encounter, after bowling their opponents out for a paltry 37 from 9.3 overs, to which they replied with 38 without loss from 3.2 overs.
The tournament will culminate on Sunday, September 4 where the semi finals and finals in all the categories will be contested.
The winner of the male category will cart off $1m and the runner-up $500,000, while on the distaff side the winner walks away with $500,000.
The Most Valuable Players in each division ride away with one scooter each, while a ‘GIGA’ concert headlined by Jamaica’s Grammy artiste Shaggy is expected to follow the completion of the finals, at the same venue.
