Golden Fleece triumph in senior softball tourney
The sun came out in all its glory and the spectators turned up in their numbers to witness an action packed weekend of sporting activities at the Zorg Cricket Ground on the Essequibo Coast, organised and sponsored by the Zorg Sports Club in collaboration with the Simons’ family.
On Saturday, Good Hope defeated Zorg by 6 wickets in the final of the 10 over Under-12 cricket competition which saw 4 teams participating.
Zorg batted first and were bowled out for 87 in 9 overs; Randy Rooplall top scored with 17 as Shane Wong took 3-11 and Orlando Persaud 3-13. Good Hope then responded with 88-4 off 8.3 overs.
The promising Wong returned to hit 28 as Rooplall picked up 2-9 for Zorg which collected $5,000 for being the runner up team. Good Hope received the Jelian Simon trophy while man of the match Wong, also received $5,000.
On Sunday, Golden Fleece overcame United Brothers by 33 runs to win the senior 12 over softball cricket competition. Golden Fleece took first strike and rattled up 169-8 after the game was reduced to 10 overs.
Eknauth Persaud slammed 73 with support from Vijay Surujpaul who made 45. Anil Durga claimed 3-34 for United Brothers who were bowled out for 136 in 7 overs in reply. Golden Fleece collected $20,000 for winning the competition.
Meanwhile, in the track events Raj Parbattie won the male 3000 meters open event while Surepa Goberdan was victorious in the female category. Zoe Gilbert and Shivnanand Ramchandra captured the male 3000 meters Under-15 and Under-13 races respectively. The winners were presented with medals compliments of the Simon family.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony,
David Simon calls for parents to place more emphasis on their children’s education and sports development so that they can become rounded individuals. He also thanked the participants for making the activities a success. Cricket Coach Forbes Daniels thanked the sponsor while making a plea for more support from the other residents of Zorg Village.
He said the Zorg S.C is in the process of organising an excursion to Wakenaam to raise funds for the club. (Zaheer Mohamed)
