Taffin Khan and Anthony Drayton both secured first places in the senior and junior categories respectively when the DDL/ TOPCO juices Emancipation Anniversary chess tournament concluded last weekend at the KEI-SHAR’S Sports Club.
Drayton (unrated) drew his match with Khan (1802) in the FIDE (World Chess Federation) rated tournament. Senior player Learie Webster (unrated) also drew his match with Khan, the reigning senior national champion. Khan scored five wins and two draws overall in the seven round tournament.
The event saw the participation of the lone female; Cuban-Guyanese Maria Thomas (unrated) who put on an admirable performance. Participating in her second tournament organized by the Guyana Chess Federation, Thomas lost her matches only to the senior national champion and rising junior talent Anthony Drayton. She defeated FIDE rated players Shiv Nandalall (1715) and veteran David Khan (1386), securing second place.
Among the juniors, Rashad Hussain was adjudged second, Saeed Ali third and Roberto Neto copped fourth. The first to fourth place junior prizewinners each received a tournament size chess set and cash prizes, through the sponsorship of DDL / TOPCO Juices. The local Chess Federation is moving to further equip junior players for future competitions.
The final points standings for the seniors at the end of the seven round tournament; Taffin Khan six points, Maria Thomas and Shiv Nandalall five points apiece, Learie Webster four, David Khan three and Alex Joseph one and a half points.
In the junior category, Anthony Drayton and Rashad Hussain scored four and a half points apiece, Saeed Ali and Roberto Neto three and a half points each, Tevon Blaize and Joshua Pedro also three points each and Carlos Petterson two and a half points.
The presentation of prizes was done by DDL Marketing representative Larry Wills. Shiv Nandalall, President of the Guyana Chess Federation encouraged the junior participants to do further research on chess with books donated to the Federation.
