Dear Editor,
The 2012 World Cup Football qualifiers is quickly approaching and the GFF is either unaware of unconcerned.
For a country that won its first World Cup qualifying match July 4, 1976 the GFF should be ashamed that Guyana’s last World Cup victory was April 1980 when Earl O’ Neal’s men defeated Grenada 3 goals to 2 in St. George’s.
Now the number one question being asked by football fans in 83000 square miles is when this 31-year jinx would be broken. Now Lets look at Guyana World Cup record under present ‘Supremo’, Colin Klass. 1988 vs Trinidad and Tobago at Camp Ayanganna Guyana lost 4 Nil. Return fixture lost 1 Nil Arima.
We could give and take with the 1988 squad because of the 1987 debacle in Los Angeles where 14 top class players abscond. 1992 campaign we lost to Suriname 2-1 at GCC drew the return fixture one all at Andre Kamperveen Stadium, Paramaribo. 1996 campaign, lost the opening match 2-1 to Grenada at GCC, humiliated in the return fixture 5 Nil in St. George’s.
2004 campaign, lost the opening match 6 Nil in St. George’s, lost the return fixture 3-1 at Blairmont. Now something had to be extremely wrong for Grenada to score 14 goals against one by Guyana in three World Cup qualifiers. 2008 campaign, we lost one Nil at Andre Kamperveen Stadium and 2-1 at Providence.
As we await the 2012 World Cup campaign with abated breath, there is nothing classy about Guyana world performance with Colin at the helm. Here is a list of Guyana’s performance under the respective captains:
1976: Maurice Enmore (Santos) won against Suriname 2 Nil at GCC goal scorers Vibert Butts and Keith Layne. Lost return fixture three Nil Paramaribo
