Convicted sex felon Dr. Vishwamintra Persaud was yesterday released on bail in the Berbice High Court on the charge involving his alleged rape of a 13-year-old female cousin.
Persaud, who was on remand, was placed on $400,000 bail when he appeared before Justice William Ramlal.
But Justice Ramlal also ordered that the physician should have no contact with the alleged victim or her family; that he lodge his Guyana passport; that he stay at least 500 metres away from the teen’s place of residence or education.
The accused was also ordered to have no communication directly or indirectly with his teenage cousin; to report to the Fort Wellington Police station every Monday and Friday at 10:00 hrs and that there be no harassment or molestation of the girl or her family.
The embattled physician was initally refused bail when he had appeared before Magistrate Roby Benn at the Blairmont Magistrates’ Court.
He is scheduled to return to court on August 3.
The charge states that Persaud had raped the 13-year-old girl by engaging in sexual penetration between February 1 and February 28, 2011 at Bush Lot Village, West Coast Berbice.
It is alleged that the teen confided in a relative and the allegation was relayed to Welfare officials. Dr. Persaud was subsequently detained, while the alleged victim has been placed in the care of the Ministry of Human Services’ Child Care and Protection Agency.
Dr. Persaud was convicted for sexual assault of a minor while working in the US and was striped of his licence.
He was working at the Georgetown Hospital when the allegations came to light, resulting in him being barred from practicing here.
