United States-based Guyanese jumper, Rolyce Boston leaped to Guyana’s first medal of the 2011 Pan American Junior Championships at the Ansin Sports Complex in Florida, Friday night while Stephan James was sixth in the 400m Final.
Boston’s best attempt in the Long Jump Final was 7.34m, which was good enough for the bronze medal. The United States of America took the gold and silver medals with Devin Field leaping to gold with 7.58m and Terrance Williams, silver with 7.54m.
Boston was one of three US-based athletes, who were expected to represent Guyana. Meanwhile, in the 400m Final, the locally-based, Stephan James placed sixth with 48.37 seconds after having the fourth fastest qualifying time in the semi-final round.
James had ran his personal best 47.27 seconds earlier in the day to qualify for the finals, but his hopes for a his first international medal as dashed when United States’, Ronell Mance turned in a blistering 46.14 seconds to with the quarter-mile event.
Trinidad and Tobago’s, Deon Lendore was second in 46.50 while Brazil’s, Anderson Henriques finished third in 46.69 seconds. United States’, William Henry II also broke the 47second barrier with 46.80 for fourth place. Canada’s, Devin Biocchi was fifth in 48.32 seconds in what was the marquee event on a list of finals Friday night in Florida.
James was evicted in the preliminary rounds of the 200m yesterday morning. He ran 21.82 in his Heat which was not good enough for the top draw.
Grenada’s junior phenom, Kirani James leads the list of finalist with his scorching 20.62 seconds time.
