Scotia Bank on board
The first competition was such a resounding success that teams, fans and sponsors can hardly wait for an entire year to pass for the second edition. It is based on this encouraging feedback that D&C Promotions (Deon Ferrier and Charles Jones) has teamed up yet again with the Bartica Cricket Committee for what is expected to be an even bigger and more competitive Twenty20 competition next month.
Speaking on behalf of D&C Promotions, Charles ‘Mice’ Jones informed that the knock-out tournament will bowl off on August 13 at the Bartica Community Centre Ground.
Their first tournament Jones noted was held in March this year and was a success in terms of the response from the teams and fans.
“We saw big crowds at the Community Centre for the games contested between teams from Bartica and Essequibo but this time around we are aiming to expand the tournament by inviting more teams.”
Eight teams will contest the tournament which will be played over 4-days (two weekends). So far the teams confirmed are Rising Stars and Challengers of Bartica; South and Central Essequibo and East Bank Essequibo. A team from Georgetown and one from Berbice will complete the 8-team roster.
The champions of this tournament will walk away with $600,000; half that amount will go to the losing finalist with $100,000 going to the 3rd place team. The man-of-the match in each game will be rewarded.
In an effort to lift the standard of the tournament regarding uniformity, Jones informed that the organisers will be providing coloured shirts for each team and they have already secured some sponsorship to take care of this aspect.
“We are really working in conjunction with the Bartica Cricket Committee to ensure that we bring off a tournament that is of a high quality on and off the field of play. We are also projecting to meet with the Captains of all the teams prior to the start of the tournament where we will discuss the rules and other logistics.”
Jones also expressed gratitude to Scotia Bank for being among the first corporate partners to come on board. Other entities on board so far are El Dorado Trading, Prestigious Inn, Digicel, Ansa Mc al Trading, Dave Scott Service Station, Babulall Mining and Hopkinson Mining.
