A post mortem performed on the remains of 54-year-old Abdul Azeem Haniff, called ‘Panjax’, has revealed that he was murdered.
According to a police statement the post mortem revealed that Haniff died as a result of asphyxiation due to manual strangulation. However up to press time yesterday no one had been arrested.
Early Thursday morning relatives of the dead man made the gruesome discovery in the man’s septic tank which is located in the back of his yard.
Mere hours before the discovery, firefighters and neighbours put out a fire which was believed to be the work of an arsonist at the man’s home.
The man’s sister, who had spoken said that he was last seen alive Wednesday evening at his home. It is believed that person or persons unknown broke into his house through a window, killed him and disposed of his body before setting his house afire.
However, swift action by residents saved the house. The blaze was contained to a bedroom. The furnishings in the bedroom were completely destroyed while the dead man’s personal items which were in another room were ransacked.
Haniff lived alone and has been crippled for the past 25 years. Investigations are ongoing.
