Guyana will be represented by a three of its best swimmers at the upcoming 14th FINA World Championships set for Shanghai from July 16 – 31.
The participation of the three swimmers, Niall Roberts, Jessica Stephenson and Brittany van Lange along with two officials is fully funded by FINA; Guyana Amateur Swimming Association President Alex Graham will attend a Special Congress while the Coach is Stephanie Fraser. The swimmers were selected using the FINA points system and will only be competing in two events each since neither of them made the qualifying times.
Roberts will participate in the 50m and 100m Freesytle; Stephenson the 100m and 200m Breaststroke with van Lange taking part in the 100m and 200m Freestyle.
Goodwill Time Trials
The Guyana Amateur Swimming Association will be holding Time Trials for the 17th Goodwill Swimming Championships scheduled to be held in Trinidad and Tobago from August 12 – 14, 2011. The Goodwill Meet which also features Barbados and Suriname is used as a stepping stone for swimmers to gain exposure for higher level competitions.
Trials will be held at the Castellani Pool, Homestretch Avenue from July 15 – 17. Competition will begin on Friday 15th at 16:00hrs warm-up commencing one hour earlier. Events to be contested on Friday will be the 200 metres freestyle and 50 metres breaststroke.
Events slated for Saturday (starting time 09:30hrs), July 16 – 100/200 metres Individual Medley, 100 metres Butterfly, 50 metres backstroke, 100 metres freestyle, 50 metres butterfly.
Sunday (starting time 11:30hrs) – 100 metres backstroke, 50 metres freestyle, 100 metres breaststroke.
Presently, some 12 athletes have already made the qualifying times with a few more likely to be added to this list. Jessica Stephenson who is still within the age limit will not be able to participate because of capturing gold medals at Carifta.
Host country Trinidad and Tobago will have the maximum team quota of 40 (4 boys / 4 girls) in the 5 age-group categories. The cost for each athlete to make the T&T trip will be $144,000 dollars.
