Philander will be hard pressed to repeat

When the annual Ballot Box Martyrs 55 mile cycle road race comes off this Sunday in Berbice, 2010 champion Albert Philander of Roraima Bikers Club (RBC) will be hard pressed to successfully defend his title judging from his performances in the 2011 season so far.
His teammate Alonzo Greaves, Robin Persaud, Walter Grant-Stuart and Eric Sankar among others are all contenders to ride away with the top spot this Sunday.
Philander suffered a puncture in last Monday’s Wheat-up race organised by his club and sponsored by NAMILCO and will be hoping that this time around he will be able to compete unimpeded or have spare wheels on standby just in case.
Sunday’s event, sponsored by Chris Jagdeo will pedal off from Freedom House, New Amsterdam from 09:00hrs proceed to the Corriverton Police Station before returning to the famous No. 63 Village for the finish.
Berbician Neil Reece who was successful on Monday last in the junior category of the Wheat-up race also won last year’s junior division and will start as favourite as will female defending champ Linden’s Hazina Barret. Veterans, upright and female riders will finish at No. 63 Village on the upward journey.

Eight prime prizes will be at stake during the course of the race.
Transportation for cyclists and officials will leave the National Sports Commission Office, Middle Street at 05:00hrs on Sunday for New Amsterdam. Last Year’s winning time was 2 hours 05 Minutes 40 Seconds.
