Dear Editor,
Shame on you Mr. Director of Prisons when you can stand up in front of a muster meeting and tell the O/C at Georgetown Prisons that you don’t know since when officers can take cigarettes into the Prison for their orderlies. That’s a big, fat lie.
Sanitation officers and kitchen officers do it all the time. Officers give prisoners cigarettes to steal the prison ration from the kitchen for them and to do any other odd jobs for them.
Sanitation and kitchen officers have prisoners working with them day to day in the prison compound cleaning garbage etc and a cigarette goes a far way.
The O/C and all the senior officers give permission for the officers to take cigarettes into the prison yard. As a matter of fact, the Officer-in-charge would give cigarettes to the officers to distribute to prisoners regularly.
Now a days, though, all the cigarettes and marijuana found in the Prison disappear into the prison yard for sale.
Because of this incident that has everyone trying to save themselves from the Minister, everyone is trying to make the officer look bad. She did what everyone else does, just taking a few cigarettes for her orderlies.
She was the kitchen officer and has 12-14 male prisoners under her supervision without any major problem in the kitchen. Her work was highly praised by both prisoners and officers.
The prisoners would proclaim that lady treats people like human beings.
I personally feel some senior rank is after her because of her husband’s reputation as a prison officer. They could not get at him so they are very much after her.
I can put my neck on a block that if the rank was anyone in that big circle, this matter would not have even reached the Director of Prison and certainly not the newspapers.
