Forty-seven-year-old Dennis Edwards was yesterday fined $40,000 with an alternative of six months imprisonment, by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, after he pleaded guilty to an assault charge.
The charge stated that on June 9, last, Edwards unlawfully assaulted Vijay Parmanand causing him grievous bodily harm.
Police Prosecutor Venetta Pindar told the court that on the day in question, Parmanand was taking his cattle north along Cemetery Road when he was told by Edwards to go in another direction. Parmanand ignored the order by Edwards, who then cuffed him once to the face, causing an injury to his right eye.
Pindar stated that a report was made to the police station and the defendant was subsequently arrested and charged with the offence.
Edwards was then questioned by the Magistrate as to why he committed such an act.
He stated, “he de passing wid he cow and knock down me bird and ain’t seh nothing.”
