Squires advances, on course for showdown with Downes

A couple years ago, a matchup between Phillip Squires and Anthony Downes would most likely have taken place in the finals.
Given their protracted absence from the local scene and the emergence of Jeremy Miller and Ezra Sue-Ho as the top players locally, their possible matchup on Sunday will be in the quarterfinals.
Squires booked his place in the quarters with a harder than anticipated battle against promising junior player Jason Glasgow.
After getting blanked in the first set, Glasgow started trading ground-strokes with the experienced Squires and was able to get the better of several exchanges, before losing the set 6-4.
On an action packed day which featured seven matches, Daniel Lopes and Oswald Coggins were the other players to advance to the quarter finals in the Men’s Open.
Lopes had little problems in getting past Kester Abrams and conceded just three games in his two-set win, while Coggins prevailed after a close battle with Adam Alves 7-6, 6-4 where both players had trouble holding their serves.
In the lone Ladies Singles match, Aretta Dey proved to be too good for Vashema Bourne as she won 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the semi-finals.
In the Men 45 Singles category, Harry Panday, Carlos Adams and Steve David-Longe, all booked their places in the semi-finals where they will join number one seed Rudy Grant. Panday faces off against Grant, while Adams plays David-Longe.
Panday was slow to start against Sue-Ho, who played aggressively by advancing to the net against the defensive minded Panday and pulled off the first set 6-4.
The next two sets saw Panday continuously frustrating Sue-Ho with well placed lobs which he had difficulty putting away and he was able to take the sets easily 6-2, 6-1 to pull off the comeback win.
Adams and David Longe both had relatively easy matches against Sakae Yamada and Albert Madramootoo who are good players on the faster paced courts.
An action packed weekend will see matches commence at 16:00 hrs for the Seniors and from 08:00 hrs for the Junior categories.
