Brandon Chanderpaul gathers off-side runs as he continued his fine form with an accomplished 84 against Berbice at Providence yesterday.
By Sean Devers at Providence
Berbice produced Guyana’s latest Test pacer while another Berbician fast bowler was in this year’s West Indies under-19 team, but yesterday on a slow Providence track, Berbice bowled just a single over of pace to Demerara on the opening day of their Inter-County two-day cricket match.
The ploy worked as Brandon Chanderpaul’s 84 and Steven Sankar’s 24 were the only scores above 20 as Demerara were bowled out for 180. But the overkill of spin could hamper the development of young pacers especially since National U-19 trials might not be held.
Off-spinner Sharaj Ramcharran who opened the bowling with pacer Nial Smith finished with 4-72 from 22 overs while off-spinner Arif Chan had 4-70 from 18 overs as Smith spent his day fielding for 57 overs.
By the close, Berbice, who only need first innings lead in a drawn game to retain their title, were 114-6 off 44 overs with Chan on 39. Berbice needs another 67 for first innings points from 21 overs.
Cornelia Ida’s (CI) 13-year-old left-arm spinner Akashaya Persaud followed up his five wickets in the first round with 5-29 from 18 overs after Chanderpaul, who made 83 in the opening round against Essequibo, again missed a ton.
After Brian Sattaur, who has already played at the regional under-19 level, was removed by Ramcharran for eight at 19-1 nobody offered much support to Opener Chanderpaul who was run out in the 50th over after hitting five fours from 144 balls.
Sankar, Sherfane Rutherford (20) and Sunil Singh (18) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures in sweltering heat against the Berbice spin quartet.
Shivindra Hemraj (8) and Akashaya Persaud (6) were removed by Chan while Michael Shalim (5) was run out as Demerara went to lunch at 109-5 with Chanderpaul on 57.
Like in the first round, the players had to wait for lunch to arrive resulting in 30 minutes being lost in the second session.
Sankar was trapped leg before to Chan at 152-6 before Chanderpaul was run out four runs later. Ramcharran had Rutherford and Khemraj Rupee (1) leg before, while Chan removed Avinash Dhaniram (4) just before Tea.
Berbice reached 21-0 from four overs by Tea as left-hander Shimron Hetmyer took the attack to the pacers; disdainfully flicking Dhaniram for consecutive boundaries before driving Kevin Paul gloriously to the cover boundary.
Watched by a handful of spectators, Demerara struck early in the final session when leg-spinner Steven Sankar, who had a five-wicket haul in the first match, trapped Nick Ramsaroop (13) leg before at 30-1.
Persaud bowled Vienora Gooniah (1) and got rid of Hetymer (24) and Nicholas Cameron (0) to leave Berbice on 38-4.
Chan and Akeem Hinds, who looks the best of the Keepers in the competition, saw their team to 88 before Hinds (21) fell to Persaud who soon bowled Latchaya for ten.
