On Wednesday, 26-year-old Orlando Thom of Old England, Upper Demerara River, appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Christianburg Magistrate’s Court, to answer to charges of threatening behaviour, robbery under arms and abduction.
He was granted bail to the tune of $320,000.
For the charge of threatening behaviour the bail was set at $20,000; for robbery under arms, $100,000 and for the abduction charge $200,000.
In a previous court appearance Thom had pleaded not guilty to all three of the offences. He maintained that plea when he appeared in court yesterday.
It is alleged that Thom, a former national swimmer, while armed with a gun robbed Dexter Pires of a motor car on Thursday March 10, last, at Nottinghamshire. It was reported that at the said time, Thom also behaved in a threatening manner towards Pires.
Thom also reportedly abducted Kemanie Sharma with the intent to wrongfully confine the victim.
Counsel for Thom yesterday requested reasonable bail considering the length of time his client had been incarcerated. He told the court that his client had served his community well, both as an international sportsman, where he represented Guyana at the Olympics, and as a youth leader.
He maintained that his client was not a flight risk and was not a felon.
Thom was subsequently granted bail by Magistrate McClennan, despite the prosecution’s objections, but he had to lodge his passport with the court.
He is scheduled to return to court appearance on July 5.
