WICB Director comes out swinging at Selectors

Claims they ‘took back’ offer for the ‘Tiger’ to play today
West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Director Anand Sanasie has lashed out at the Clyde Butts led regional selection panel claiming that they rescinded on their invitation to pick Guyanese left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul for today’s fifth and final ODI at Providence.
Another WICB Director had told Kaieteur Sport that the dependable 36-year-old Chanderpaul, a veteran of 129 Tests and an average of almost 50 and only behind Brian Lara with Test runs among West Indians was asked to retire and play his farewell match today.
The WICB official informed Chanderpaul had refused to accept this offer to play his farewell match today.
The rock-solid middle-order batsman who averages over 54.52 in First-Class and over 40 from 268 ODIs denied this and said he never declined to play at Providence as the recent public verbal battles between senior players and their Board continued.
Opener Chris Gayle had recently come out swinging at the WICB and made himself unavailable for the rest of the Pakistan series although he would be ready for the India series which starts next month.
Sanasie, one of three Guyanese Directors on the WICB said last evening that he would like his frustration and disappointment that Guyana’s most successful cricketer, Shivnarine Chanderpaul was not considered for selection in the One Day International Series to be known.
“I find it most regrettable that the Selectors who had offered Shiv the opportunity to play his farewell game before his home crowd would now take back that invitation without explanation,” Sanasie said.
Sanasie said he was making this statement in his private capacity and as a person interested in cricket and was aware and fully cognisant of his role and function as the Secretary of the Guyana Cricket Board and as a WICB Director.
“I recognise and respect the rules/ practices and conventions which apply to members of those Boards making public statements.
However, I find myself flabbergasted, disenchanted and annoyed that Guyana’s most successful cricketer is promised by the team management and selectors that he will be played in the 5th ODI against Pakistan at Providence, Guyana and seemingly without rhyme or reason and with utter impunity reneges upon that promise,” Sanasie said.
“It would be unfair to say that the actions and statements attributed to Shiv in the media and in private could entitle the selectors to renege upon their promise.
I am of the firm belief that whilst players and their representatives are free to speak publicly in less than a frank manner about events; and whilst players and their representatives could “speak out of both sides of their mouth”; the selectors could not and ought not to ever do so.
The promise to a player must be honoured at all costs or the very selection process would be irreparably undermined,” Sanasie concluded.
Ramnaresh Sarwan (43.07), only behind Sir Vivian Richards (Ave 47.00) in ODI average among West Indians, was recalled to the team only after the series was lost 3-nil in Barbados and will again play today in an unchanged squad from the last match in Barbados.
Gayle, the region’s leading opening batsman, is participating in the IPL in India after claiming that he knew of his sacking from the team for the first two games through newspaper reports.
