Two men who have been described as kleptomaniacs were on Friday remanded to jail by Magistrate Fabio Azore when they appeared before her at the Whim Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge of robbery under arms.
The men, Premchand Rasawan, called ‘Angle’, and Deochand Raghibir, called ‘Deportee’, both 39 years old of Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice, are accused of robbing Bissondial Ramsarran of Ankerville, Port Mourant. Corentyne last Sunday. The case for the prosecution as presented by Corporal Roberto Figueira was that on the day in question the two men, while armed with a gun, robbed Bissondial of a quantity of gold jewelry, one cell phone and $33,000 in cash.
In court the prosecutor asked that bail be refused due to the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence.
The prosecutor further stated that it was not the first time that the men have been charged and convicted for offences of such nature.
He stated that Rasawan was convicted at both the New Amsterdam and Whim courts before, while Raghibir, who is a deportee, was convicted at Whim. Rasawan was previously convicted for stealing $4,000 from the purse of a policewoman.
He had requested a drink of some water and while the officer left to fetch him the water, he stole the money and was making his escape when the policewoman chased after and caught him.
