Khemraj Ramjattan’s contretemps

As expected, any activity that the ruling PPP embarks on, even if it is an internal one, it is bound to engender negative responses from sources that have no right or credibility to utter a single word. The recent appointment of Mr. Donald Ramotar, to the position of political adviser to President Jagdeo is just a second case in point. So what was the first one?
Well, it was when Donald Ramotar was salubriously and unanimously selected to be the presidential candidate of the ruling PPP party. You would imagine that these detractors would make this progressive development their business to criticise.
It is as though the PPP is not taking the best interest of the country to heart. So this party decision has demonstrated its maturity and the national interest at heart. Yet it became an outrage for these infantile and iniquitous pseudo politicians.
The smooth passage of Mr. Ramotar’s selection should have been taken (since it is so) as the harbinger of good will for all Guyana. Furthermore, this ease of the shift in future leadership was a token of solidarity within the PPP.
This positive decision then irked outsiders, and accusations of stupidity, coercion, collusions and other vile aspersions were cast at the party as a whole, and specifically on the likes of Messrs Bharrat Jagdeo, Ralph Ramkarran, Clement Rohee and Ms. Gail Teixeira (talk about foolish and misdirected jealousy).
One needs to think and ask, why what transpires within the PPP, is a concern of the Freddie’s and Ramjatan’s of Guyana. The former type is characterized by evil carping and outrageous machinations; the latter, by the inability to introspect. Only recently, the Ramjattan led AFC was in a quagmire regarding leadership, race and scandals. So Ramotar’s current and future roles in Guyana’s political landscape, since it is a good omen, should not be unfairly pounced upon.
The other major concern with Mr. Ramotar’s new portfolio is the pronouncement from Mr. Ramjatan. He is questioning the suitability and appropriateness of Ramotar’s new role.
The PPP/C Administration has the full support of Guyanese who invested their confidence in it, and so when the Government makes any decision it is broad based and reflects wide spread popularity.
If the ruling PPP party, forming the government of Guyana, selected based only on mere fraternity, then major sectors across Guyana would not have been so diversely represented.
One only has to look at the Guyana Police Force, the Guyana Defence Force, the openness to parliamentary debates, the inclusion of the opposite parties in talks and discussions etc.
Maybe Ramjattan has to be told that even though he was selected as the AFC’s presidential candidate, it was Mr. Raphael Trotman who had the better national image. So one can ask, how broad minded is Mr. Ramjattan, and what this says for Guyana, in the unlikely event his party wins a few seats.
So just by way of reiterating, let the Ramjatan’s of Guyana know and be reminded of who is Mr. Ramotar. He is the long-standing General Secretary of the PPP. He joined the PPP in 1967, and has been in its leadership since 1979. Ramotar has always been a key member of the Executive Committee of the party since 1983, and assumed the position of Executive Secretary one year after the PPP was restored to office in 1992. As if this is not enough, here is more to support his present role and imminent presidential candidacy.
Ramotar is an economist by training, and has had extensive experience within the party and has represented the party on numerous occasions overseas. He has published a number of articles and is a regular columnist for the Mirror newspaper.
He was also a member of the ACP- EU Joint Parliamentary Assembly and a Bureau member of that organisation and a serving member of Guyana’s National Assembly since 1992. So what else does he need?
Let it be emphatically stated that Mr. Ramotar is more than ready and equipped for the present and future roles he is immersed in.
