Courts Pacesetters Basketball Club has withdrawn from the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Final against Ravens this weekend, citing the poor planning, method of communication and the federation’s general nonchalance as their primary reasons. A communiqué from GABF President, David Patterson via email to the media yesterday settled on tomorrow night as the date for the final showdown of the National Club Championships. But that will not be possible with the withdrawal of Courts Pacesetters.
“Pacesetters cannot play. You don’t do things like this. I learnt of the Finals verbally on Tuesday and I told the (GABF) Vice-President that Pacesetters will not be able to play. He said he will get back to me and to date, he has not,” Robert ‘Bobby’ Cadogan said.
The Courts Pacesetters Head Coach indicated that the final was originally set in the pipelines for tonight, but because a particular team could not have played, owed to religious beliefs, the final had to be moved to the following night (tomorrow), which affects him personally.
“(Floyd) Levi (the GABF VP to whom Cadogan referred to earlier) informed that he would have contacted me after a meeting on Tuesday after I related certain things to him,” Cadogan indicated before adding that he only learnt of the GABF final decision last night.
“As a matter of fact, I only received a text message last night telling me that the final was really on. After then, I got a call from Patterson telling me that the final is Saturday. As the Coach of Pacesetters, I informed them that we cannot play,” he told this newspaper.
Maccabees and Scorpions were expected to play the third place playoffs tonight, but Maccabees could not make the assignment. Cadogan stated that it was poor planning to change a schedule to accommodate a third place game that has less relevance than the final.
In addition, he said that the GABF did not have the courtesy to write his team to inform them of their latest decisions. He said text messages and phone calls for such matters are not professional and does not speak well of the national administration of the sport.
Asked about his personal reason for being unavailable Saturday night, Cadogan informed that he is getting married on Sunday. He said that the GABF was informed of that development and they ought to have been more considerate in their planning of the event.
