AFC reaches out to Kingston fire victims

Leader of the Alliance for Change, Raphael Trotman, and several executive members visited the Kingston fire victims on Tuesday and handed over numerous boxes of clothing and toys.
But according to Latchmin Punalall, the donation will certainly not be the last aid the victims will be receiving from the AFC.
Mrs Punalall said that plans are already in the pipeline to ship other much needed relief from the United States of America.
Speaking to one of the recipients, Kaieteur News was told that most of the affected families slept on bits of cardboards under the burnt out building which was once home to nearly 50.
Some were staying at Austin House, home of the Archbishop of the Anglican Diocese, situated across the road from the burnt out apartment building. Dozens of children were seen lying on a mattress spread on the concrete floor.
The homeless families are pleading with the general public to witness their plight.
They were displaced on Monday afternoon when fire of unknown origin ravaged a dilapidated three-storey wooden house at the corner of Barrack and High Streets, Kingston.
The fire started shortly after 14:00hrs in one of the 26 apartments where an occupant had left a lighted kerosene stove unattended
Fire Chief Marlon Gentle who was at the scene told reporters that the building was earmarked for demolition since 2007.
He said that they tried to carry out the demolition order but encountered problems since the building was occupied.
According to Gentle, the City Engineers Department had also encountered difficulties getting the occupants out of the building even though it was deemed unsafe. Mayor Hamilton Green in an invited comment said that the building was ordered to be demolished since last year. He explained that the occupants were given notice and recommendations were made for them to approach the Ministry of Housing since they claimed to have nowhere else to go.
According to residents in the area, the building was a heaven for criminal characters and for people engaged in nefarious activities.
