The resurfacing works at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) Basketball Court, which had stalled all of the court’s other rehabilitation plans around September last year, finally commenced earlier this week on the premier basketball venue in Linden.
Kaieteur Sport understands that the resurfacing of the court is expected to be completed ahead of the Victory Valley Royals Schools’ Basketball Final Four that jumps off next Wednesday. It was supposed to have been completed seven months ago.
The progress of the overdue works will be a welcome development within the community since a corporate entity had already committed to building dressing rooms and washrooms for both male and females following the advancement of the court.
A representative from the corporate entity, which will remain nameless, disclosed that they were waiting on the other stakeholders to fulfil their obligations before they can begin works on areas they had committed to following a visit to the venue.
The Regional Office in Linden had awarded the contracts for the re-laying of the surface and the construction of the bleachers to separate contractors. But before the bleachers could be erected, it was agreed that the court’s surface would have been done.
A contractor’s broken-down paver was initially blamed for the non-progress of the resurfacing of the court. The Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) had removed both rings, buoyant that the works were moving apace when conversely it did not.
But instead, the sub-association’s programmes dived to an all-time low with the removal of the backboards since the court was deemed unplayable. The return of the MSC court to a respectable standard is expected to restore the sport’s image in Linden. (Edison Jefford)
