– left off CARIFTA team
Current Junior Sportsman of the Year, sprint ace, Chavez Ageday failed a physical fitness test yesterday at the Police Sports Club Ground, and as a result, received the negative news that he will be left off the Junior CARIFTA Games team.
Ageday strained his hamstring on Sunday at the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) Under-23 Championships while competing in the 100m. He was selected among six athletes to compete this weekend at the CARIFTA Games in Jamaica.
Kaieteur Sport understands that the AAG had consulted Dr. Max Hanoman when the athlete was injured Sunday. Hanoman reportedly indicated to the local association that the athlete will need a lot more time than just four days to recover from the injury.
However, the AAG nevertheless agreed on a physical fitness test to support the medical test. The physical test would have included other sprinters over perhaps 100m at the Police Sports Club Ground yesterday.
The activity was arranged to act as testimony to Ageday’s inability to run competitively after he sustained the injury Sunday.
His management, which included President of the Ruralites Athletics Club, Charlie Griffith and Coach, Raymond Daw, agreed that the athlete should not undergo the physical test based on the medical report that had already deemed him unfit to compete.
Hence Ageday did not run yesterday, thereby failing the fitness test. The AAG and his management team both concurred that the right decision was made.
President of the AAG, Colin Boyce stated that Ageday’s future this season was at risk had he ran yesterday. Boyce said that there are other significant international meets this year that Ageday can compete at once he makes the grade.
Ageday stopped out of the 100m Sunday at about 60m, clutching his hamstring. He did not finish the steamy race.
Instead, Linden’s Winston Caesar Jr. ran his personal best 10.40 seconds in winning the event. It was an ephemeral showdown that ended prematurely. Ageday was expected to travel on the team that will depart Guyana tomorrow morning for Jamaica. (Edison Jefford)
