The development of cricket in the Ancient County of Berbice took another step forward when the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) with sponsorship from the Diamond Fire & General Insurance Company (DF&GIC) launched this year’s edition of the Diamond Fire & General Insurance Inter Zone Under-19 tournament. The High Street based DF&GIC has injected over $335,000 into the tournament.
Public Relations Officer and Chairman of the Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster said that four teams – West Berbice, New Amsterdam/Canje, Lower Corentyne and Central/Upper Corentyne would be playing each other. Only players born on or after September 1, 1992 are eligible to play.
The tournament will bowl off Wednesday April 27 with West Berbice opposing New Amsterdam/Canje at the Cumberland Ground; Lower Corentyne comes up against Central/Upper Corentyne at the Area ‘H’ Ground.
The respective winners will then clash for championship honors with the losing teams playing for third and fourth place.
Foster stated that the matches would be played over two days with the first innings limited to 65 overs.
The winning team is guaranteed $60,000 and a trophy with the losing finalist collecting $40,000. Third and fourth place attracts $30,000 and $20,000 respectively.
It was disclosed that the Junior Selection Committee of the BCB will use these matches as the basis for selection of the Cellink Berbice Under-19 team.
Foster expressed gratitude to the Management and Staff of DF&GIC for their continued investment in Berbice cricket while informing them that their investment has made it possible for them to dominate the game at the Inter County level.
BCB Treasurer Anil Beharry spoke on the importance of discipline and education for junior cricketers playing for Berbice. He expressed the hope that the tournament would be of the highest standard and that Berbice would continue to play the game with the same passion and dedication as was done in the past.
Special mention was made of former Guyana Cricket Board Secretary Bishwa Panday for the role he played in the renewal of the sponsorship with both Foster and Beharry describing him as a true friend of the County.
Managing Director of DF&GIC Ms. Tara Chandra praised the BCB for the professional relationship her company enjoys with the entity and the way they do business. The Company, Ms. Chandra stated views its partnership as an investment in the future of young cricketers who can graduate to the level of representing Guyana and the West Indies.
Ms. Chandra also stated that her Company was dedicated to a long term relationship with the BCB as long as it upholds its high standards.
Among the players expected to play are Dominic Rikhi, Andy Mohan, Linden Austin, Romario De Jonge, Shawn Pereira, Shailendra Shameer, Lloydel Lewis, Kandasammy Surujnarine and Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai.
