McKenzie High School stunned Linden’s Technical Institute at the McKenzie Sports Club Court Friday afternoon to remain in contention for another Victory Valley Royal School Championship title in one of the biggest games of the tournament since it started.
McKenzie showed excellent maturity and big-game temperament to hold off a late surge from an enterprising Technical Institute to win 47-44 with Sheldon Noel leading McKenzie in scoring for the first time in the 2011 event with 16 points. Parish Cadogan, who had taken over the offensive leadership of the team this year, supported with 10 points. Surprisingly, guard, Marlon Pollydore did not make helpful contributions on offense as he makes normally. Pollydore simply was not his usual self; instead, the starting guard gave up his role in a crucial game to Colwick Benjamin, who delivered with 12 points. Geoffrey LaRose assisted with 11 points for the Technical Institute in their first lost of the tournament.
McKenzie had a near perfect combination of offense and defence that reduced the control Linden Technical Institute had on the game in the first five minutes. Cadogan helped his team assume an easy 27-18 points’ lead at halftime before Technical Institute’s second half surge.
With Pollydore misfiring, the Technical Institute was forced to find a replacement with Benjamin becoming the unanimous choice. He filled the gap an absence of Pollydore left but was unable to produce a game-wining performance after being thrust into the role.
His efforts along with that of Larose helped the Technical Institute to a 32-42 points’ deficit with four minutes remaining in the game. However, McKenzie High played like true champions while the Technical Institute suffered under intense defensive pressure.
McKenzie High did not panic against the late surge but held their nerves to win the game while a potent Technical Institute return to the drawing board. McKenzie and Technical Institute are both favoured to win the competition along with Kwakwani Secondary.
In the first game Friday afternoon, Christianburg/Wismar Secondary School won 29-22 when the school played New Silver-City Secondary. Norvil Jeffrey scored 12 points for Christianburg with Anthony Jonas and Ian Alli adding five points each for New Silver-City.
