Berbice campus to expand ICT capabilities

…Communications building in the pipeline

Massive extension works are in the pipeline for the uplift of Information Communications Technology (ICT) at the University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC). This was recently revealed by the Director of the campus, Professor Daizal Samad.
The Director stated that most of the developmental thinking depends on Information Technology (IT). He said that they will be extending the computer centre at the Tain Campus.
In addition, 18 flat- screen computers will be added to the computer laboratory at the Tain’s campus. “We have new projectors that we will be using in pedagogy and in teaching,” he said.
Prof Samad also said that the campus has also acquired, for the first time, an ‘E- Tablet’. “We are making great strides in IT.”
The Director said that the campus, as in the past, is eager to share its many resources with the general public. “The moment we start thinking about UGBC as a thing in and by itself, we’re making a mistake.
“I am insistent that what we have will be shared with all schools, primary and secondary, with the Felix Austin Police College; all Police Stations and Outposts, hospitals and everybody needs to be connected, with UGBC as the hub of that connection”, he said.
He added that if an internet architecture backbone is created, the possibilities can be endless to benefit the delivery of education in Berbice.
“All the connections to schools and so on radiate like ribs out of that backbone, and encased then is the heart of education in Berbice. And that is the vision I have. We’re waiting for the bandwidth and the fiber optics and so on; it’s not far away”, he said.
Prof Samad posited that UGBC will be participating in the training of trainers for the One Laptop For Family Initiative (OLPF).
Brand new computer servers and new plans to run workshops on the employment of technology in teaching are also in the pipeline. “What we need to do is use the technology at our disposal and make teaching and learning much more efficient than it is, and we are going forward with it”, he said.
Prof Samad added that a new building dedicated to
Communications will be erected shortly on the grounds of the Tain Campus. He stated that there is a capital budget for this venture and that the building will be “cutting- edge”. He is optimistic that members of the media will take up offers to study when the campus offers programmes in Communications in the future.
Prof Samad said that his campus has opened itself up to the community and to Berbice at large in recent years. He said that UGBC has trained the police at Felix Austin Police College in IT and ethical behaviours, oral communications, etc. He also added that the Community Policing Groups (CPGs), farmers, and teacher- trainees have all benefitted from the resources provided by the campus.
