DEAR EDITOR,
It is with deep sorrow and pain that I write to address a recent fatal incident that unfortunately took the life of a two-year-old. Reports in the media stated that a young mother left her three-year-old and two-year-old in the care of her mother, who then left the two-year-old in the care of the three-year-old.
Apparently the older of the children was playing with matches, the house caught afire, the three-year-old ran out and the two-year-old perished in that fire. Is that not a horrific enough of a situation for the Human Services Minister to publicly comment on? Or has she served the PPP/C long enough to become heartless like many of the other ministers? It is also clear that poverty may have been the reason for that young mother having to leave her toddlers with her mother; she probably went off to earn, again, a direct result of the PPP/C’s raping of our nation.
What is equally troubling is the recent suicide rate across the nation among the youths, including 13-year-old Avona Pestano of Bartica, who hung herself on Monday 24th January, 18-year-old Nandallall of Caria Caria in the Essequibo River, who ingested a poisonous substance on Wednesday 9th February, the nine-year-old, who hung himself on Monday 14th February, 40-year-old Nalini DeAgrella, who plunged to her death off the Demerara Harbour Bridge on Tuesday 15th February and 13-year-old Selena Fredericks, who was discovered hanging from a beam in her living room on Saturday 19th March.
Isn’t Minister Manickchand concerned enough to make statements on these incidents and mobilize her Human Services Staff (social workers) to address this issue? Hasn’t the Minister learnt anything from the 2010 Neesa Gopaul saga?
I trust that Minister Manickchand will see this letter as a wakeup call and have a more hands-on approach in dealing with the Human Services of our nation, especially as it relates to saving the lives of our future generation. Kimberly Ann Bailey
