Is the multi-million dollar building which now stands at the Princes and High Street location where the old Guyana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) headquarters was situated, another white elephant?
The edifice was originally supposed to house the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, however, there was a change of plans to accommodate the Ministry of Health after a tragic fire destroyed that Ministry’s building a few years ago. It was later reported that it would instead be utilised to facilitate other government departments, but this also proved to be an initiative that was never executed.
After further discussions, it was reportedly agreed upon that the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) would take control of the building and house selected departments there, but to date, the building is still not serving any meaningful purpose.
Kaieteur News understands that the GRA was supposed to have occupied the entire building since September, last.
One businessman explained that he was told that the Tax Office was scheduled to move there, but because of a delay due to works being carried out on the structure, the date was pushed back to January this year.
This newspaper was told that since January, the building has been effectively abandoned, with no construction being carried out and no workmen even being seen on site.
