The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) has a strong idea of those track athletes who will be included on its 2011 CARITA Games team following last weekend’s rain-hit National Youth and Junior Championships at the Police Sports Club, Eve Leary.
While the association is yet to officially announce a shortlist following the meet that acted as one of the basis for national selection last weekend, AAG President, Colin Boyce yesterday indicated some athletes’ selection are automatic based on performance.
“If you look at the way some of the athletes performed last weekend on the heavy track, you will be able to select your team,” Boyce said, adding that Guyana will be again looking to send a very strong team to most prestigious meet for juniors in the Caribbean.
Probing the AAG President to name some names, Boyce said that they are still to meet to select a representative team, but it is expected that current national ‘Junior Sportsman of the Year’, sprint ace, Chavez Ageday and double CARIFTA gold medallist, Jevina Straker be named on the team.
He also mentioned the performances of quarter-miler, Melissa Byass and sprinter, Stephan James as phenomena that should influence the AAG Selections Committee.
Ageday won the 100m and 200m Boys Under-20 races last weekend with James pressing him to the line in the 200m. James then returned to run an impressive 50.95 seconds in extremely slushy conditions. The performance and time were both extraordinary.
Straker was basically running against the clock in her events as she completely demolished those who challenged early. Meanwhile, Byass ran a minute flat in the 400m event, defeating the sprint queen, Tiffany Carto, in the process to send tongues wagging Sunday.
Boyce told Kaieteur Sport that Carto, who competed at the CARIFTA Games last year, might be too young to compete in the U-20 category this year. The CARIFTA Games whose 2011 edition was threatened earlier this year has competition in U-17 and U-20 age categories. Carto won the 100m and 200m last weekend but will turn 17 years old this year.
In addition, Boyce believed that the field events athletes should get a fair chance at making their impression for national selection. As a result, he said that the association is mulling having some form of trials so that the field athletes could stake their selection claim.
Last year, Winston Caesar was among two jumpers that made the team. Likewise, the AAG head believes that Guyana should have an encompassing team with both track and field athletes, at the meet. The 2011 CARFITA Games will be held in the Mecca of athletics, Jamaica.
