Dear Editor,
Now that it seems that the PPP will be defeated this year at democratic elections despite Jagdeo’s appeal to race and the past, I would like to recommend the following actions of the new government during its first year in office.
This is in addition to my earlier recommendations published in the past. It will be a tough task but with the will and zeal and goodwill a new government gets, it should be tackled without delay.
1. New Police Commissioner appointed (Greene is already past retirement age)
2. New Chief-of-Staff of the GDF – Gary Best (should proceed on early retirement)
3. Khurshid Sattaur (new GRA head needed since he has been compromised)
4. Reputable and qualified Auditor General hired (from overseas if required)
5. Appointments to the judiciary confirmed (no more acting appointments) more judges hired
6. Spy building in Castellani compound converted into an archives building
7. Immediately identify new site for camp street prison
8. Repeal DPP power to appeal
9. Review benefits and allowances for president’s legislation
10. Spearhead constitutional reform to reflect current day realities (power sharing relative to Guyana debated)
11. Review prescriptive land title rights and provisions
12. Seek international help to freeze assets of former regime members and repatriate same to the treasury
13. Do forensic audits on government finances (starting with monies allocated to GuySuCo)
14. Order commission of inquiries into atrocities starting from the 60s to the present including, Sun Chapman, Lindo Creek, Bartica and Lusignan massacres and the Mash day jail break among others
15. ERC ‘figurehead’ Edghill relieved of his duties.
16. Investigate the burning down of government buildings and removal or destruction of documents from government offices after the defeat of the PPP (this is my anticipation but I hope I am wrong) – those found culpable should face the full force of the law.
