WIPA Board applauds Fantastic Windies performance
The Board of Directors of the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) has congratulated the West Indies cricket team on their comprehensive victory over “giant-killing” Ireland in the ICC World Cup 2011 tournament.
Ireland, which recently scored 329 to beat one of the tournament-favourites, England, managed to score only 231 in reply to the WI total of 275.
The game will be remembered for the maiden century scored by Devon Smith, and the ninety-four run blitz by Kieron Pollard off just fifty-five balls. Also crucial to the victory were Sulieman Benn’s four wickets and Captain Darren Sammy’s three wickets and a timely run-out. The game also marked the debut of Andre Russell who celebrated his World Cup debut with a timely yorker to remove Ireland’s Ed Joyce. Some of the cricketing cognoscenti have called it “the ball of the game”.
WIPA is proud of the manner in which all of the West Indies players have handled themselves at the competition. The team has displayed exemplary poise and perseverance.
They put the ugly Bangladesh stone-throwing incident behind them to deliver as sharp and focused a performance on the field as any winning team in the tournament thus far. We applaud them on the hard-fought victory and wish them continued success in the competition.
