Ramcharran Persaud was jailed for three years on Monday, by acting Chief Magistrate Priya Beharry, after pleading guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
Based on reports given to the court by police Corporal Venetta Pindar, on March 4, at Moblissa, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, lawmen unearthed 50 grams of marijuana in a camp. Pindar added that on the day of the incident, a mobile police patrol swooped down on the camp, located in the backdam, where they found the accused.
Searches were carried out and in a makeshift shelf, ranks found the illicit substance. Persaud was arrested and charged.
Magistrate Beharry asked Persaud if he accepted what the police were alleging, to which the accused responded that the drug was not found on him, but it was his property.
“It (the drug) was not on me, it was found in a camp in a big, big backdam, but it was my own.”
He then went on to explain to the court that he frequently uses marijuana for an asthma condition. Nevertheless
