Schools Table Tennis tourney fixed for Berbice
The steering committee of the Berbice Table Tennis Sub Association is not letting up in its mission to make Table Tennis once again one of the top sports in the county and in keeping with a promise made at the re-launching of Table Tennis in the Ancient County, the committee has organized a two day tournament for school children and those attending Tertiary Institutions in Berbice.
The two day tournament is slated for Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 March at the Berbice High School auditorium and is open to Berbicians and or those attending school in the Ancient County. It will be played in five categories, which will be for both boys and girls. The categories are U10, U13, U15, U18 and Open.
Participants are expected to come from through out Berbice and are expected to see players from primary and secondary schools, both private and public, as well as the New Amsterdam Technical Institute, the Upper Corentyne Technical Institute, Port Mourant Training Centre and University of Guyana Berbice campus.
The competition will be sponsored by the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports, based on a pledge made by Minister Dr. Frank Anthony at the re-launching of Table Tennis in Berbice. Trophies and other incentives will be available for the top three finishers and other outstanding performers in the respective categories.
The Committee has organized a number of coaching sessions at various venues for two successive Saturdays, March 12 and 19 so as to help whip the players in shape. Sessions are expected to be held at the New Amsterdam Multilateral School, the Berbice High School, Rose Hall Community Centre in Canje, Port Mourant Training Centre, University of Guyana Berbice Campus, and Skeldon Community Centre.
Among those scheduled to conduct sessions are Berbice based Coaches Floyd Conway, Gibran Hussein, Desiree Lancaster, school, teachers Jermaine Glasgow and Cordell Austin, while National coaches Linden Johnson, Ray Anderson and Muniram are also expected to do stints. The senior players in the county have also given a commitment to assist with coaching sessions.
Schools with tables and those interested in having coaching done at their respective venues can make contact with any member of the steering committee.
The committee through the Department of Education and the Ministry of Sports is encouraging schools to make sure that they participate in the activity. Racquets, balls and other necessities are expected to be provided by the GTTA, while the Department of Education and the Ministry of Sports are also expected to play major parts.
Since the resuscitation of the game in the ancient county there has been a surge in the number of persons playing the game. A number of players also participated in both Mashramani open and veterans tournaments which were recently held in Georgetown. A number of Tennis tables were also recently donated to various areas in Berbice including the NAMS, BHS and J.C Chandisingh schools PMTC and Rose Hall Community Centre.
