The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) conducted a training workshop for umpires at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall yesterday as part of its institutional strengthening since the need for a lot more umpires increased with the decentralisation programme.
Primary among the topics that GTTA General Secretary, Godfrey Munroe, Andrew Daly and the National Coach, Linden Johnson covered were the rules of the game. The clinic was aimed at the urgency in lifting the standards of officiating in local table tennis.
The subjects included the role of umpires in administering of the rules; the rules of the game; the penalty available, warnings, yellow cards, red cards; ensuring that there is no infringement of the rules, misbehaviour, breaking the rules, coaches giving advice and the handling of the issues; the exercising of judgment, impartiality; the appeal process available to players and coaches and the hierarchical system/procedure for the escalation of issues and disputes; doubles and the order of play; injury time, how to discipline coaches’ input for team matches, changing of racquets; rules covering legality of serves, calling let and the instances, recording scores; the new rules covering VOC glues among several other areas.
In addition to covering theoretical aspects, the participants were given role-play situations where they were given actual match-situation/conditions and required to proficiently demonstrate those areas and examples covered in the theoretical session.
The participants observing were asked to identify the areas of deficiency or areas missed by the participants in the practical simulation. The observing participants were asked to make necessary corrections on those areas missed.
The GTTA intends to create a nucleus of umpires with the requisite accreditation and knowledge available for domestic and international competitions. The GTTA will host an ITTF-sponsored Umpires accreditation working shop in May.
