Dear Editor,
In September 2009, former Minister of Information in the PPP Government Mr. Moses Nagamootoo said, “the fear today is worst than the Burnhamite days”. Mr. Nagamootto did allude at that forum hosted by the US Government that Freedom of Information legislation is necessary and important for Guyana.
So why is Sam Hinds and Bharrat Jagdeo not listening to the people? Who is the loser here? Certainly not Mr. Nagamootoo who is well recognised by the international community as a fighter for freedom of speech in Guyana?
One commentator said, “Freedom of Information delayed is Freedom of Information denied” and today we see this in reality, as the PPP hide all the fraud that is taking place in Guyana under their watch. The PPP Government is using our taxpayers’ money to fund projects, but little information is available to the people on these projects’ document and their status with respect to prudent management of the taxpayers’ funds.
The following projects are just a snap shot of how our money is being squandered:
1. the ICT trunk main project – how much the $1.2 billion of the taxpayers’ money that Jagdeo committed has been spent so far and on what terms?
2. The Hinterland Electrification Project – how much of the $4 billion of taxpayers’ money that Jagdeo has committed to this project has been spent so far and which Amerindian villages have solar systems to date?
3. The Skeldon Sugar Factory – how much of the $5 billion of the taxpayers’ money that Jagdeo has committed has been spent on this ‘white elephant’? Is this factory working? How much money did we borrow from China and the CDB in the name of the taxpayers?
4. Essequibo Ferry – how much money was borrowed from the Chinese for these ferries?
5. And yes the now ill-famous project, the One Lap Top Project – how many billions of the taxpayers’ money has been spent at multiples of the cost of a unit lap top to buttress this corrupt and collapsing Government?
If we had a functional Freedom of Information law, this corrupt Government would have had to answer to the people a long time ago. You the people, please pay keen attention, I have highlight projects that has cost you over $20 billions (yes your money) which you know little about and I have not even mention the Flipper Project – Amaila Falls Road and the Jagdeo Inc. pet project – Marriot International.
How much longer will you the people allow this wholesale robbery of your assets?
The time to make a choice is now, the time to enforce that decision is soon – in the polling booth on Election Day.
