Esuan Crandon impresses with 4-18 as national practice match ends in draw

National medium pacer Esuan Crandon showed no signs of a side strain which kept him out of Guyana’s last match against Barbados during an impressive 10-over spell yesterday at Bourda as the two-day practice match ended in a draw.
The 29-year-old Rose Hall Town player captured 4-18 as Leon Johnson’s X1, replying to Veerasammy Peramul’s X1 218, declared at 158-7 from an overnight position of 27-1 as Johnson (40) and Royston Crandon (39) both failed to build on good starts on a slow track and sluggish outfield.
When play ended in fading light, Permaul’s X1, behind by 60 runs, were 48-1 after Shemroy Barrington, who top scored with 64 in the first innings was caught and bowled by former National under-19 off-spinner Steven Latcha.
West Indies under-19 opener Trevon Griffith, who played a thumping pull and a bullet-like square cut for boundaries, was unbeaten on 23 and Steven Jacobs on six.
When play began, Richard Ramdeen fell for 16 while after the demise of Johnson and Royston Crandon, who both played ODI cricket, Vishaul Singh (9), Chris Barnwell (5) and Wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble (5) fell cheaply as Esuan Crandon, who had 90 wickets from 38 First-Class games since making his debut at this level a decade ago, produced lateral movement.
Apparently satisfied with Crandon’s first outing since straining his side in St Vincent two weeks ago and with the cream of the batting back in the pavilion, Coach Mark Harper ended the innings with Ricardo Jadunauth on nine and Chanderpaul Hemraj on three to give National openers Chandrika and Barrington another chance to bat.
The Guyana players will break camp today and should re-group on Tuesday when the home team will continue preparations for their next game against England Lions at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence from Friday.
Narsingh Deonarine, who it is understood has recovered from ‘tennis elbow’ which made him unavailable for Guyana’s matches this season is expected in Guyana on Sunday while his Albion team mate Sewnarine Chattergoon whose fitness status should be known this week, could be both available for selection for Guyana’s fifth round game.
The Claude Raphael led selection panel is expected to name the 13 man squad by Tuesday and a concern will be the unavailability of leading bowler Davendra Bishoo who is in Asia with the West Indies World Cup team.
