“Gimme a chance nah, ah de hungry.’ The pleas of a man who had stashed himself in a Regent Street store with the intention of ‘cleaning it out’ when the time was right.
The man who claimed that he was from the East Coast of Demerara was found hiding in the ceiling of the Sachi General Store after security personnel observed movement in the store through hi-tech sensors.
Kaieteur News understands that on Saturday, the man had entered the store as a normal customer during opening hours.
He managed to secrete himself unknown to the owners and when they closed the facility later that afternoon, he assumed that he was safe to carry out his intended act.
However, he did not cater for the sophisticated security mechanisms that were fitted in the store.
As he made his move around the store, the sensors picked up his movements and relayed it to the monitor which was being manned by security personnel at another location.
Certain that someone was inside, the security staff went down to the store and summoned the storeowner.
When they opened up they carried out a search and found the man hiding in the ceiling.
It is not clear if the man had started to stash away any items in the store.
“All he do was put up he hand and start beg. He lucky he ain’t get licks,” an eyewitness told this newspaper.
The man who also claimed that he is a mason was subsequently handed over to the police and is expected to make a court appearance soon.
