Armed bandits in Berbice went on a robbery spree, attacking the occupants of three Canje households in a brazen assault in the wee hours of yesterday.
The men who were masked and carried handguns, smashed their way into the home of 20-year-old Sahadeo Wengagloun, approximately an hour after they had raided his neighbour Suresh Sooknanand’s Jabeer Street, Cumberland Village residence.
According to the police, the men first went to the home of Sooknanand around 00:30 hours where they smashed louvre panes and gained entry. The men assaulted Sooknanand and his wife, ransacked their house, and went away without taking anything.
Not satisfied, they next went to the Wengagloun’s home, where they also smashed louvre panes to enter.
According to the police, Wengagloun was asleep and was awakened by the men who had entered the home. They held him up and took away a cell phone and a wrist watch after which they escaped, discharging several rounds in the air as they did so.
It is suspected that the same men then proceeded to the home of Fazeela Hussein, 27, of East Canefield, Canje, and robbed her and her husband, Wazim Yashwardeo, of jewellery valued at $45,000 after they had also smashed a window and entered the home.
Police were informed, and up to last night, one known thief was in custody assisting with investigations.
According to Rose Hall Estate labourer, Suresh Sooknanand, who spoke with Kaieteur News following the incident, he was sleeping and was awakened by a loud crash from the area of the louvre panes at the side of his house. He followed the smashing sound and encountered an intruder who had already gained entry. He engaged the bandit in a scuffle for the .38 pistol the man had brandished and received a gash to the head in the process, after being dealt a blow with the weapon. Sooknanand said he immediately became dizzy.
He said that he thought that that was the only bandit in the house when he suddenly heard the screams of his wife, Banmattie Singh. She had encountered another man with a gun in her bedroom. She stated that he stuck her up with the gun and told her not to make a sound.
“Don’t holler; don’t make noise he tell me.”
She said he then pushed the gun to her face, locked the door from the inside, and began to ransack the room. During this time, Singh recounted that she was screaming at the top of her voice.
“Me scream the life out me body,” she said.
One bandit then shouted to the other, “Dis place nah geh nutten, leh we guh lang.”
She said the man then opened the door and ran out, while the other bandit exited via the same window from which the two had entered. They also fired two shots at a nearby house where Sooknanand’s daughter lives before leaving.
