Narindra Latchman, a general contractor of Enmore is accusing the Berbice River Bridge Company Incorporated (BRBCI) of wrongfully demanding a fine from him for leaving his 4X4 Pick-up parked at the corner of the BRBCI office located at D’Edward Village, West Bank Berbice.
According to Latchman, around 09:00 hrs on Wednesday, he parked his vehicle at the corner of the road, a few metres from the bridge toll station. He said he did not see any ‘No Parking’ sign in the area.
He then left to supervise some works that were going on in a street in the area. When he returned to his vehicle around 13:00hrs, he found a sticker on the windshield of his vehicle, asking him to make urgent contact with the bridge supervisor.
Upon checking with the supervisor, he was told that he had parked in a ‘No- Parking Zone’ and had to pay a fine of $10,000.
Latchman said that he then told the supervisor that he did not see any sign that stated parking was illegal.
The supervisor, he said, then told him that he has to pay or no other vehicles of his would be allowed to traverse the Berbice River Bridge. The supervisor further told him that he [the supervisor] is working with instructions from the Chief Executive Officer of the BRBCI.
Latchman said that he left without paying; still demanding that he did not park on an illegal spot.
One of Latchman’s trucks coming from East Berbice and crossing the bridge was detained by the bridge officials on the eastern side. The truck, up to Thursday, was still parked near the Crab Island area on the Eastern side of the Berbice River Bridge, having been grounded by the bridge officials.
Chief Executive Officer of BRBCI, Omadatt Samaroo, was in a meeting on Thursday. Latchman said that he, too, was not able to contact Samaroo since the incident took place. A confused and angry Latchman said he did not break any law and that the bridge company has no right to impound and prevent his vehicles from traversing the bridge. “For the past 48 hours and yesterday, Mr Samaroo is in a meeting”, he said.
The contractor has told this newspaper that his company is losing a lot of money since he is not able to carry out works with his fleet of vehicles. (Leon Suseran)
