… Monies ready to be paid to pensioners- Henry Greene
Pensioners who were made to wait almost one year to uplift their monies from the Police Finance Office can now do so because the money has been released from the Ministry of Finance.
In early January last year the money which amounted to $3.4M disappeared and to date no one has been placed before the court although a massive investigation was launched.
The money represented retroactive increases in pension for retired ranks, who to date have still not been paid.
Last December, pensioners were expressing their frustration over having to run back and forth to enquire about their monies. One man claimed that he was told that it was the ‘Government’ who was responsible for the money not being released.
The man said that he had been running to and from the police finance office for more than three months.
Last week, Commissioner of Police Henry Greene promised to look into the matter.
Yesterday Greene told this newspaper that word from his finance office was that the monies were ready. He noted, too, that the police finance department was waiting for the money to be released by the Ministry of Finance.
It was reported in a press statement in early January of last year that the money had been in a canister, secured in a locked cashier cage.
The release said “investigations were being conducted into the larceny of $3.4 million from the Police Finance Office, Police Headquarters, Eve Leary,” According to the release, “there were no signs of any breakage to the Office”.
However, to this day only departmental charges were instituted against some ranks but no criminal charges.
