Madhoo bows out in preliminary round
National champion Norman Madhoo, who represented Guyana and the Caribbean at the 2011 Ladbrokes.com World Darts Championship which is being held at the Alexandra Palace in London, England, failed to make it past the preliminary round after losing to South Africa’s qualifier Devon Petersen 3-4 on December 22.
Madhoo, who also made the trip last year, could not reproduce the form that saw him to another national title and surrendered an opportunity to make it to the first round.
Petersen, who faced England’s Jamie Caven in the next round, was eventually beaten 1-3 to follow a similar path as Madhoo.
Seventy-two players participated in the championship with 16 starting in the preliminary round where the 8 winners joined the other 56 players in the first round.
Meanwhile, defending champion Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor, who was bidding for his 16th title, lost 2-5 to Mark Webster in the quarter-finals.
Webster produced the greatest performance of his career to end the hopes of Taylor and avenged a 6-0 thrashing to him in the 2010 semi-finals.
This is the 18th championship that is being organised by the Professional Darts Association and the total prize monies involved is one million pounds.
Among those who witnessed the championship was England’s Prince Harry.
