As the festive season draws closer, more and more persons are traversing the streets of Georgetown, with preparations for Christmas in mind.
This time of the year often entails Christmas shopping, hence business proprietors around Georgetown, expressed concerns and the need for police security.
Yesterday, Minister of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, visited store owners on Regent Street, to deal with their concerns and the challenges they faced, during this festive season.
Rohee stated that the aim of the gesture is to enable the Ministry and the police force to tailor the security concerns of the store owners. He added that he is pleased to see that the level of security consciousness has increased significantly.
Minister Rohee said that he observed that most proprietors have security systems in placed, to help reduce crime at this time of the year. He said that store owners are aware of the fact that they will have to deal with minor offences from time to time.
While the Minister was engaged in discussions with store owners, he was told that business has been “fair”, but that there is small percentage of shoplifting.
A proprietor stated that recently, two women attempted to steal items by placing them under their dresses, but public- spirited persons summoned nearby police and prevented the duo from committing the crime.
Rohee explained that if visits are made to a significant number of stores and 75 percent are faced with the same security challenges, then it is the responsibility of the Ministry and the police force to address the situation.
However, the Minister added that strong security plans have been implemented in each division across the country, with given resources. He added that special attentions is given to the urban areas.
