– porter beaten, locked in washroom
In a brazen daylight robbery yesterday, four gun-toting bandits escaped with an undisclosed sum of cash after holding up a Beharry Group of Companies van that was making deliveries in 19th Street, Diamond, East Bank of Demerara. One of the three victims was beaten and locked in a washroom.
Eyewitnesses said that one of the robbers had a shotgun while his accomplices carried handguns. According to reports, the bandits appeared to be aware that the van delivers cigarettes to shops in the area on Tuesdays, since they were waiting in a shop for the vehicle to arrive.
Kaieteur News understands that the robbers had even walked with a crowbar to wrench open the van’s money canister. The crowbar and weapons were reportedly concealed in a bag that one of the robbers carried.
A female shopkeeper told Kaieteur News that two men entered her yard at around 13:00 hrs, ordered beverages and sat at tables in the yard. Two other men then entered the yard, ordered beverages and sat at another table. They also asked her to turn up the music.
The shopkeeper said that she went to her kitchen but then heard someone calling at the counter. However, when she arrived at the counter she heard a ‘clicking’ sound, but saw no sign of her ‘customers’. Unknown to her, the Beharry van had arrived and the robbers had pounced on the porter when he entered her yard to make his delivery. They had then locked him in the outdoor washroom.
However, when the shopkeeper glanced towards the roadway, she saw that her ‘customers’ were holding the driver and the security guard from the delivery van at gunpoint.
The woman said that she immediately telephoned a neighbour and asked her to call the police. Another female shopkeeper in the same street said that the van stopped in front of her shop and her husband went inside to collect money for the cigarettes. She then went outside to collect a phone card for her son. But as she was heading toward the shop, she saw a man pressing “a long gun” into the driver’s back while ordering him to put his hands in the air.
The woman said that she assumed at first that the men were fooling around. “I tell them ‘like y’all playing Christmas early,’ but when I see the man (with the gun) watch me I run inside.”
At the same time, she saw her husband coming outside with the money and shouted at him to retreat into the house.
Kaieteur News understands that the bandits also forced the security guard to the ground, while asking if he had a firearm. Fortunately, the guard had his weapon concealed on his person.
A source said that the robbers used a crowbar to wrench open a canister in the van. After collecting the money, the men ran north up 19th Street and reportedly escaped in a waiting car.
After the men had escaped, the shopkeeper who had alerted her neighbour said that she heard someone shouting and banging at her outdoor washroom. She opened the door and found the porter that the robbers had locked inside.
Ranks from the Golden Grove Police Station eventually arrived, but up to late yesterday evening there were no reports of any arrests.
