– off to US on one-week visit
Brigadier (retd) David Granger on Sunday, last, met scores of Guyana Defence Force veterans who are members of the ex-GDF Association. His visit was in response to an invitation from the Association’s President, Lt Col (retd) George Gomes.
Granger, during the meeting, congratulated the Association on the valuable work it has been doing to improve veterans’ welfare and on its ability to increase its recruitment.
A former Commander of the Defence Force, Granger has put forward his name for nomination as the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) candidate for the general elections, due in 2011.
The recent meeting was aimed at learning about veterans’ concerns and developing a cooperative approach to improving the lives and livelihood of former members of the Army in the long term.
Granger, a member of the Guyana Legion, is the author of the book “Guyana’s Military Veterans” in which he calls for the institutionalization of the post-service administrative arrangements for ex-soldiers. Most soldiers and non-commissioned officers are required to retire after only twenty years of military service while still in their early 40s and as a result, some have found it difficult to be re-employed.
The ex-GDF Association, the Guyana Legion and the Guyana Veterans Foundation are the main veterans’ organizations locally.
Granger is currently in the USA on a one-week visit to meet PNCR members in New York, New Jersey and Washington DC.
The visit, which was planned several weeks ago, is described as an initiative to strengthen party solidarity and reinforce support for the PNCR for the forthcoming elections.
In an invited comment, Granger said that his mission will be “to emphasise the importance of party unity and to encourage former members to return to the party.”
Granger’s visit will include press conferences, radio programme interviews, Town Hall meetings and attendance at a church service.
Granger has in the past, upon the announcement that he was interested in the position of Presidential Candidate for the PNCR, pledged to reunite the PNC into the vibrancy with which it began.
