A boat captain and his four crewmembers are thankful to be alive after gunmen attacked them several miles off the North West District Coast early Sunday morning.
Captain of the ‘Anita’, Vishnu Bhagwandin, said that the incident occurred around 10:00 hours on Sunday, in an area called Mine Field.
According to Bhagwandin, he and his crewmembers were returning from a fishing trip when they were attacked by three heavily armed gunmen.
Bhagwandin said that while they were in the river the three men approached them and two forcibly entered their vessel and held them at gunpoint.
“Two of the men come over in we boat and start mek we tek off one ah we engine and put it in dey boat.”
The man added that one of the gunmen then assaulted one of his crewmembers while demanding other valuables. Bhagwandin said that they were forced to hand over two drums of fuel a quantity of cigarettes and food items. The man said he estimated his losses in the vicinity of one million.
Luckily, Bhagwandin said, their vessel was equipped with an “old engine” which they used to make their way back to the Hague foreshore, West Coast Demerara.
Bhagwandin said that in all his 18 years of being a fisherman this is the first time he was attacked on the high seas.
