Plank walking begins on December 15 @ GFC
By Franklin Wilson
The 21st Edition of Guyana’s Premier knock-Out Football tournament is set to kick off on December 15 at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground with a double header.
Eight of the 20 teams competing will have to battle for a place in the group-of-16 playoffs. Those teams are Georgetown’s Riddm Squad and Fruta Conquerors; East Demerara’s Victoria Kings, Bakewell Buxton Stars and Ann’s Grove; Upper Demerara’s Bakewell Topp XX and Netrockers and Bartica’s Liquid Gold.
It means that these teams will all play one extra game if they were to go all the way as compared to the teams who have been drawn in the group-of-16; these teams are defending champions BK International Western Tigers, Sunburst Camptown, Pele, Santos, Alpha United and the Guyana Defense Force, all city teams.
Buxton United is the only East Demerara team in the main draw. Berbice two representatives – Rosignol United and New Amsterdam United have done well to be in the main mix as is West Demerara’s lone representative Seawall FC formerly Pouderoyen, Upper Demerara’s Milerock and the lone overseas side, Caribbean United coming out of the Land of the Flying Fish – Barbados – made up of players from across the Caribbean including Guyana and Jamaica among others.
So the talk will soon be over and it will be time for teams to prove that they belong in this premier spectacle. No room for lapses and winner will progress.
Fans, supporters and spectators will be warming up their thoughts as the predictions commence as to will go all the way.
Defending champions Western Tigers will not find the going easy but as champions, they have to prepare to fight and fight hard to retain the top spot and bragging rights for another year.
The official opening of the tournament is set for next Sunday at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence where the March Past will take place along with two matches featuring the National Under-20 team against an Upper Demerara Under-23 line-up. The main attraction brings together Brazil’s Athletico of Roraima State and the senior Golden Jaguars.
When the competition begins proper, Riddim Squad will take on Bartica’s Liquid Gold in the first game at the GFC Ground on Wednesday December 15. Defending champs Western Tigers will have their first test when they play in the feature game against East Demerara’s Buxton United.
