Defending champs Camptown, GDF advance

Georgetown teams continue to dominate this year’s NaMilCo Football Festival when two more made it to the next round as competition continued on Wednesday evening, at the Tucville ground.
Following the path taken by Santos, defending champions Camptown and the Guyana Defence Force in the presence of NaMilCo’s Finance Controller Atonaram Lakeram and Public Relations Consultant Affeeze Khan booked quarter-final places after comfortable victories against Buxton-based teams United and Stars respectively.
In the feature encounter, GDF hammered Stars 5-0 with a double coming from Warren Gilkes (38, 86), Hubert Pedro (77), Randy Andres (90) and an own goal that opened their account courtesy of defender Bako Lewis (31).
Earlier, Camptown cruised past United 4-2 through strikes from Reshawn Sandiford (63, 80), who tucked in a brace, while Lancelot Ralston (48) and Nigel Codrington (70), added the others. For United, Clive Andries (51) and Keon Norville (90) were the players on target.
The feature clash failed to live up to expectations after a lively start with the visitors almost immediately putting pressure on the GDF backline that had to absorb a few anxious moments, before they had settled.
The Army, however, displayed admirable discipline and fitness and eventually begun to counter attack with efficiency and suddenly the early pressure was transferred to the opposition as Gilkes proved to be a thorn in the flesh, executing some mesmerizing runs at the Stars defence.
However, it was an own goal that accounted for the soldiers opening goal when a cross from the right side ended inside the Stars penalty area and Lewis in his attempt to steer the ball to goalkeeper Sion Griffith only succeeded in placing it into the back of the nets with the latter out of position.
The Army continued to push forward in numbers, especially Gilkes, whose silky skills was a constant bother for the opposing defence and it was just a
matter of time before he entered the score-sheet.
It came through a beautiful sequence of passes, before Gilkes roving on the left side of the pitch weaved his way past two defenders, feigned the goalkeeper and smashed a well directed left-foot shot into the far corner to end with a result fitting for a crowd pleasing play.
The half came with no addition to the score.

On the resumption, the Army exhibiting supreme fitness was relentless in their raids on the opposition and had it not been for some brave defending and goalkeeping, the score might have increased much earlier.
A cross from the right flank resulted in a scary clash between GDF’s Desford Williams and Griffith where the latter suffered broken hand and had to exit the field.
Thereafter, it was one-way traffic as the substitute goalkeeper was left exposed to the mercies of the Army’s onslaught and he gave up three more goals, before the final whistle sounded.
Earlier, Rolston broke the deadlock against United three minutes after the second period begun, but his goal was followed shortly after with Andries drawing level for United.
Sandiford than restored the lead for Camptown and Codrington another to give some valuable cushion between the two sides.
That advantage was stretched even further through Sandiford’s second goal of the match, before Norville’s strike just on the stroke of full time provided some solace for an otherwise comfortable game for the Campbellville-based unit.
The competition continues this evening with another double header that features hosts Fruta Conquerors versus Seawall United from West Demerara at 18:00 hrs, while Alpha United take on Milerock of Linden in the marquee contest at 20:00 hrs.
